A well-known talent in literature, performing arts and cinema in Taiwan. He is the artistic and stage director of Stalker Theatre Group, which he founded in 1994, co-author of the Edward Yang’s films, “A BRIGHTER SUMMER DAY” (1991), and director of many plays, operas, and three films.
His first film, “THE LOVE OF THREE ORANGES” (1998), was an invitee to the Venice Film Festival 1999 and won the Prix FIPRESCI at the Chicago Film Festival and the Best Director at the Festival of the 3 Continents the same year. His second cinematic venture, “THE HUMAN COMEDY”, which has won the Prix du Public at the Festival of the 3 Continents in 2001 as well as the Golden Dagger Award (Best Film) in the Muscat Film Festival. His third film, “A GARDEN IN THE SKY”, was a digital film full of visual excitements and fantastic imagination. It has won the Best Art Direction Prize in Taipei Film Festival 2002, and was also an invitee to Moscow International Film Festival in 2003. His latest film, “THE WALL-PASSER” (LE PASSE-MURAILLE), a fantastic film with reference to the same title of Marcel Ayme’s famous short story is the most expected Taiwan film in the meantime and definitely will be a milestone in Taiwan’s film industry.
Every child possesses the power to freely move between his or her real and imagined worlds, but they invariably lose this power when they turn into adults. In telling this story of a youth who falls in love with a deaf girl in one world and a visually impaired girl in another, I have sought to encourage viewers to reflect upon the magic of this power they once possessed.
Because the story is set in the future and weaves between a “real” and imagined world, we shot much of the film in a number of out-of-the-way places in Taiwan. Among these were several wonderfully surreal locations that have, as far as I know, never appeared on the screen before. I therefore hope that this film will also provide viewers with a glimpse of some of the less familiar, albeit it no less real, facets of this diverse island country.
